I actually wrote a sonnet about tooth pain once. In high school. The assignment was to expand on a line from Shakespeare, and I chose the line “If it were done when ’tis done…” from Macbeth, and turned it into:
If it were done when ’tis done, I could leave
This office with the happiest of faces,
As waking from a dream; yet I believe
I’ll ne’er escape the agony of these braces.
The orthodontist’s visit’s at an end;
the metal on my teeth glints in the sun,
but those with tightened braces comprehend
That it is never done when it is done.
For one whole month no dentist’s rubber hands
Shall squeak against my teeth, not scrape my gum,
And yet their ghosts, these newly tightened bands
Shall wrench my mouth with pain for weeks to come.
…and I can’t remember the ending couplet. Rats.
